Spotlight on Curriculum
Bedford Road School
Overview
The ELA curriculum maps were developed during a five year period with the input of consultants, classroom teachers and building level curriculum leaders.  The maps provide us with a timeline that reflects units of study across the school year.  These maps reflect the Common Core ELA Standards that were adopted by New York State in July of 2010 that are seen below.  The maps can be found on the main page under curriculum.  The standards in ELA for gardes K-4 are attached below.

The Social Studies Maps reflect the content area that is taught in each grade and the literacy skills needed to accomplish this.  The essential question is a key component in recognizing what the student needs to know on the topic.  These maps are also located in the Curriculum section.
In addition math core standards build upon the essential skills needed to compete with an ever changing and complex world.  Students need to develop critical thinking skills in order to solve difficult problems.  This combined with essential math skills form the basis of a competitive math program.  This year we have implemented Math in Focus, a Singapore approach to Math Instruction.  The power point that was presented at the PTA meeting is also attached.   We are currently developing updated maps that align with the Common Core standards.
The brochures list the extended learning classes that are offered for grades three and four.  In addition students can play chess or participate in Math Olympiad during recess.
We aspire to lead our students to become lifelong learners.  As elementary school professionals we encourage students to work together effectively toward goals and create a community of learners. We recognize the importance of technology in preparing our students for their future.
